A wonderful 1946 publication titled "California Missions" by R. Roger Blythe. This 32-page booklet is illustrated with beautiful sketches by T. Roger Blythe. The following information is from the booklet's "Foreword": The twenty-one old Missions of California stand as sentinels along El Camino Real, the King's Highway from San Diego to beyond San Francisco. They were outposts of religion and civilization when our forefathers were fighting the battles of the Revolutionary War on the Atlantic Coast. Time has dealt heavily with these monuments of the past, and a number of the Missions are now in ruins. Yet, there is not one of them whose romantic story has been lost. The story of these shrines of the past is the rich heritage of every Californian.
