Woventextiles have been a feature of Bolivian life and culture for thousands ofyears, the oldest examples possibly pre-dating pottery finds. Althoughutilitarian in origin, they are one of the key distinguishing features of thevarious indigenous cultures that still exist today. A lliclla (or awayo) is a utilitarianshoulder cloth. They have been used for carrying a baby or personal goods. Some awayus and llicllas are made especiallyas ceremonial ground or altar cloths. They were also used as wall hangingsdisplayed with other objects representing "leader" status. Weavingof awayo is done in twoseparate parts which are then sewn together; this central seam shows decorativedetails and colors that highlight the beauty of the tapestry. Textilesare immensely valuable as investments, and although items may have beendesigned originally to fulfill a strictly practical purpose, they haveincreasing significance as works of art and as pieces of cultural history.
