Physically the Geochron looks like a framed world map, about 2×3 ft. in size. The colorful map itself is an endless belt that is driven slowly from left to right by an electric clock motor in synchronism with the rotation of the earth. All known legal time zone boundaries are delineated on the map by dark blue lines which in most cases, converge on lettered pointers on the top edge of the map. These letters identify the standard time zones and also represent the short wave radio prefix for that zone. All Boardrooms come standard with Dura Drive, the Dimmable LED Lighting System, and Sunlit LED Analemma. Size: The Boardroom Geochron is 36 1/4" Width x 24 3/8" Height x 5" Depth Specifically, the Geochron illustrates:

Topographical or Geopolitical mapsets? Until 2015, the Geochron had only been built around a Geopolitical mapset. As world history changed, so did the map. It’s a map the represents the world by human boundaries…which change, like East and West Germany, the USSR, and recently North and South Sudan. The geopolitical mapsets in every clock we build or re-build are current with world conditions today. The Topographical mapset shows the earth like “view from the sky”. Indeed, the satellite imagery composited into an entire map of the world is stunning. Rather the human view, this is the Earth of the last 10,000 years, with several dozen large cities shown for reference. The muted contours of the ocean bottom are visible too in this map. (Early prototypes showed ocean bottom in full scale, which we decided was too overwhelming.) Both maps show
The Dura Drive System Introducing the most radical improvement to the Geochron in 50 years: Dura Drive. The Dura Drive is a new hardware update for the motors, gears, and linkages that run the Geochron. All new clocks will be fitted with the Dura Drive, and come with a three year warranty on the drive train itself. Dura Drive Improvements:
Why an LED Lighting System? Deeper Colors and Better Depth: When we made a prototype in the shop with LED lighting system we discovered something else, the colors on the map look brighter, and have a greater depth. Now, maybe it's just us because we live with these clocks, but we think you'll see a difference in these photos. Energy Savings: An LED lighting system will reduce its energy consumption by about 60%, to 17 watts… about one incandescent chandelier bulb! Longer life for the Geochron machinery: Fluorescent lighting systems generate heat, and a Geochron at 90 degrees v. room temperature will cause the 300 moving parts in the Geochron break down faster. For example: The blue polyurethane shades that create the sun's termination line literally bake and crack from the heat over time. Several years ago, we started using thicker shades, but LED lighting will keep the inside of the Geochron at room temperature, and the non-metal components inside will last longer. Longer Life: LED elements burn four times longer, and we estimate your Geochron will burn continuously for six or seven years before the LED elements are easily replaced. Remote Controlled Dimmable LED Lighting system For years, Geochron owners have asked if they could dim the lights – especially at night. Now you can, but we've taken it one step further with remote controlled dimmable LEDs that
Two Models of Geochron There are two models of the Geochron World Clock: Original Kilburg and The Boardroom. Each model has slightly different features, though functionality is exactly the same. The map runs the same, the seasons change the same and both include a minute analog dial in the top right hand corner of the front panel. This dial allows for more accurate time keeping because it displays the exact minute after the hour and runs in unison with the map. The major differences are aesthetic. Upgrade panels are available on the Original Kilburg model. These upgrades are aside from the seven vinyl finishes available at an entry level price. The upgrades include; Stainless Steel, Powder Coats, Anodized Aluminum and Natural Wood veneers. Boardroom models feature a special "cove molding" on their natural wood front panels. The History of Geochron The Geochron was invented by James Kilburg with the idea that one device could be used to determine what time it is anywhere in the world. Kilburg was a mechanical engineer who perfected his craft and knack for ingenuity while living in Luxembourg. After moving to America, Kilburg devoted his life to creating innovations such as the car cigarette lighter, the first automatic dialing telephone, as well as the automated maraschino cherry pitter. The Geochron however was inspired by less practical reasons. In 1962, Mr. Kilburg was overseas visiting relatives in Luxembourg. Unable to make the trip to Europe, his wife Dorothy picked up the phone to call him one day. With some help from the international operator, she got through to California. Unfortunately for her husband, it happened to be 2:00 a.m. This gave Mr. Kilburg all the inspiration he needed to create the world's first accurate global time machine. In 1965, the Geochron was born. After many years in California's bay area, Geochron's factory moved to Portland, Oregon in the summer of 2007 where it continues to manufacture this incredible product. The Legacy Continues Today For over 40 years, the Geochron has been used by world renowned business leaders, dignitaries and diplomats and even by those in the White House. Today, the legacy continues. You can still own an original, hand-made of the same exacting standards as originally specified by Jim Kilburg in 1965. |
