Outdoor Use but Cannot Be Left Outdoors!
Review of this item I own these and two thermacell lanterns. The patio models are fine but I wish they were more heavy duty (4 stars instead of 5) You have to be careful pushing the plastic rods into hard soil since they're on the thin/weak side. Review of this technology I was on the fence about this technology when I got the lanterns because we had mixed results (used twice camping). But after careful thought I figured out where I went wrong. 1. Too large of a coverage area. As many have mentioned, effectiveness is impacted by wind. Their advertised coverage area may be true if you're in zero wind environment. To solve this you basically have to buy more devices and strategically lay them out. 2. I started them up too late. I would highly suggest you get them going at least 30min before you want to be outside. If you have an adequate amount of thermacells per your coverage area then you need to allow them to run for about a half hour to build the barrier. 3. High and low If you're going to be sitting at a patio table it may be prudent to put one on top of the table and underneath. The "clean" air pocket underneath your table will be a mosquito safe haven if you only have one on top of the table. They will feast on any legs/feet that are available. Obviously the first two points equate to these devices being severely overpriced. However, there are a couple tips I could share: 1. Shop around and look best deals. Consider buying 12hr pads instead of 4hr pads. 2. Look for ways to mitigate the effects of wind. Just like you would for a campfire. You could use your vehicle or the wall of your home to "trap" the repellent if the wind blows in a particular direction. You may be able to get away with buying fewer thermacell devices. This review is based on my experiences camping. By implementing the steps above I have been able to enjoy a bug spray free labor day weekend at Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine FL 2020. I have two of the patio models and two lantern models. I put them at the four corners of our tent site. I also parked the vehicle on the far side of the square shaped site so minimal product will be lost if the wind blows in that direction. I took a chance by not lathering up in the usual DEET but my theories proved correct. Not a single bite! I believe when using these products like I've mentioned they easily beat out the traditional citronella candles. There is a slight smell with thermacell but no where near as strong as citronella.

if you’re ok with chemical repellents, these are great
i stopped paying or mosquito treatments at my house because they werent working. this is cheaper and ACTUALLY works. the downside is that its only a 7.5ft radius each direction, so to cover an entire yard would be a LOT, but i can set it up on the perimiter of my covered patio and it protects the entire patio from any entering mosquitoes. so yeah - they work like magic, and im not going to question magic - thats how you get sent to some weird realm in the future. and im not about to go that route

Zero Bug Bites Summer Camping in St. Augustine FL.
Well. It worked for a while from 5pm to about 7pm. We live on a canal in an apartment complex and the mosquitoes are absolutely brutal. Also the Gulf of Mexico is about 3 blocks away. As soon as the sun went down, there was no stopping the mosquitoes. But it did work while the sun was setting. There’s no way we could’ve been outside without this. We set up this mosquito repellent so we could put our new patio furniture together outside. Really, without this there’s no way we could’ve done it outside. As soon as it started getting dark, we were getting bit. I just think the mosquitoes are so bad here there is no escaping them. I would buy again for the day time. I know it works because I walked my dog about 1 block and could see the mosquitoes and feel them biting me. As soon as I got close to my apartment again there was very minimal mosquitoes. I’d recommend this. Just wish mosquitoes would die off lol.

no mosquitos
I live near a river, mosquitoes have inundated us every summer, you couldn't sit outside even with off on, the pets everyone miserable. I have a fairly large front deck, lovely place to sit, unused most of the summer UNTIL I bought these, I already had a personal one and the lantern. I place the four of those at opposite corners, not a single mosquito not even the pets laying on the floor are bothered, it's a dream come true.

Perfect for this mosquito magnet!
I have used this a few weeks on our patio at home and have yet to be bitten while using it. I’m usually that person who can sit in a group where no one will get bitten but I’ll get bitten 20 times. So I’m always desperate to find something that keeps mosquitos off of me. I love this thing so far. The only downside is replacing the cartridges which don’t last quite as long as I’d hoped they would but as long as it keeps working, I’ll keep replacing them! And I LOVE not having to cover myself in DEET, and then having to shower again when I come in from outside just to get the sprays off of me. I do keep the unit right beside me or I hold it in my hand and wave it around my area every now and then. My husband laughs but hey, it’s working so far!

Perfect for this mosquito magnet!
⁃ The package comes with the MR300 repeller, 1 fuel cartridge and 3 repellent mats. ⁃ Make sure that, as you purchase this MR300 repeller, purchase the refills (both fuel cartridge and repellent mats) at the same time as the mats and fuel cartridges run out really quickly. One mat lasts for 4 hours only. Therefore, you will have no mats after only 12 hours once you have used the 3 mats provided! This will save you the aggravation of having to wait for the refills sent to you in the mail as the mosquitoes continue to bite you! Needless to state, the repeller only works with the fuel cartridges and mat repellers. ⁃ Make sure you buy the Thermacell MR300 holster as well. It doesn’t come with the holster. The holster is important if you are walking or doing chores and you want to attach the MR300 repeller to your pants or tent. Without the holster, you’ll be forced to carry it with you all over the place as the claim of 15 feet isn’t true. (See below) ⁃ Each fuel repellent mat does last for 4 hours. ⁃ The fuel cartridge lasts for 8 hours at the very maximum. ⁃ This means that you will constantly have to buy both the fuel cartridge refills and the repellent mats. I bought the 120 hour pack but there is a 12 hour, 36 hour, 72 hour and even 300 hour pack! ⁃ The repeller works most of the time but there is going to be one or 2 ‘Thor’ mosquitoes that will tolerate the smoke emitted by the repeller and bite you. However, most mosquitoes will keep away. In a day of working in a garage with the doors opened, I got bit once or twice. Before the repeller, I would have to take numerous breaks or apply some Woods repellent spray on myself. ⁃ It doesn’t affect flies. Just mosquitoes. For flies, look for another product. ⁃ You have to have the product very close to you for it to work. The ‘15 feet’ claim is not true. More like 3 feet. You have to have the repeller very close to you at all times for it to be effective. ⁃ It gets hot to the touch, so be careful when handling it. Only grab it from the sides and not the area where the mat is placed.

Great product!
I live in Central NH where the mosquitos are as big as airplanes and as numerous as the number of Trump ex-press secretaries. Got the line on Thermacell from a friend who works taking environmental samples in swamp estuaries and he said it's the only thing that worked for him. When he came up to visit he brought on and it kept all of us mosquito free. I bought one the day after he left us and have used it religiously since. It works and it works every time. I love it.

Repels About 95% Of Mosquitoes. Uses Refills Fast And Refills Are Expensive.
My thernocell is amazing. The first complaint I always heard was "i still see bugs flying.", but once the thermo cell heats up ( about 15 mins.) it works amazing not a bug in sight

Easy to use and effective.
We live in Florida where the mosquitos are large and in charge. Our thermacell does a fantastic job keeping the no-see-ums and mosquitos away from the family. Just make sure to keep a box of refills with you because you don't want to be stuck with them.

Must have!
Best thing I purchased for the amount of camping that I do in Scouts.

Works!
Was a bit skeptical, but figured, based on the reviews that I would try it. My wife and daughter use them when working in their garden, and they report great success! My daughter has always been sensitive to bug bites, and she stays bite-free with this device. We liked it so much we bought another one. Highly recommended.

Perfect for this mosquito magnet!
This thing is the most valuable player of my latest camping trip. I bought this and a refill kit based on some favorable reviews by some youtubers that I trust. As soon as the tell-tale buzzing of mozzies started to invade my ears, I busted this little bad boy out. 20 minutes later we had a light vapor coming off my little buddy, this thermacell, and we kept it going for days. It was obvious that it was working, because if we let it die out, we started to get eaten alive. 20 minutes later, no bloodsuckers. Fantastic! My only complaint is that it's hard/impossible to tell if it's started. There's no visual indicator until the vapor is coming out. You can click a few times any maybe not start the butane, I think. I let it sit for a few minutes wondering and clicked the started and heard a 'whoop' of the gas igniting. I guess I have a way to tell it's been started, but I don't like it. I'd pay extra for a visual indicator that the process has started.

Is it on?
Overall to be fair the thermacell & refills did work to keep mosquitoes away (ONLY mosquitos) a good 85-90% of the time. However, I live in middle of no-where Wisconsin & our mosquitos are a nightmare lab experiment released in spring & immune to EVERYTHING! I am a little disappointed in the max life 12 hr refills. they do not last for 12 hrs. The butane cartridge is empty aftr mayb 5-6 hrs & the blue longer tab is already turning white. they also seem to be less potent than the 4 hour refills for some reason. which Im also not thrilled bout. I got this thinking it would be cheaper in the long run than goin to the store every week to restock my supply of Off Wipes, 98% Deet spray & whatever new thing I was giving a try. You'd think no bug would come within 20 feet of me! I was also hoping this product would replace the Deet spray for good, but no such luck...sorry environment. I use this product in conjunction with others & thus far its in my top 3 of must have insect repellents whenever I do something outdoors lasting longer than 30 minutes.

Doesn’t work with any type of wind
We were at Scout Camp for Wood Badge leadership training and my first weekend I did not have one. Two other had one and swore they were as good as they say they are. I personally don't like wearing bug spray so I thought it was a small investment to try it. I bought this and was not disappointed. It worked like a charm.. we had very few mosquitos and black flies bother us. I didn't notice any harsh smells and it's really easy to setup and use. I bought a case and refills right away. The case is nice to have to wear it on your belt. The only thing that I found hard was ensuring that it ignited in broad daylight. There is a screen to see when it is lit but very hard to see in the sun. If you ventrue the woods, buy one.. you will enjoy the experience more.

In my top 3 of must haves
I first bought these Thermocell portables in the large square table-light version and this portable version, seeveral years' ago in CT. I did a heap of research then and they were more expensive at that time but I took the plunge. Why? Well I have 'that' sort of skin that every flying horror loves to eat. I remember once in the islands waking up with 90 mosquito bites on one leg and 50 on the other - despite coering myself all night with a sheet. These things love me and I have the scars, lumps, oozing, etc to prove it with a permanent supply of a large bottle of antihistamines at hand. So after spending hundreds of dollars on candles, coils, electronics and everything 'Citronella' as well as all the aersoles and deet - it was useless and I caved in after reading reviews. I'm a 'tell it like it is' sort of gal - so here it is. This is the only product I have found that keeps these suckers away. End of story! Whether humid and rainy conditions, a hot summer's night on the porch - they do the job beautifully. Even my husband commented that he hasn't been bitten and he never comments! I actually prefer these to the lamp version because they are smaller, more portable and I have a few - one to keep on the patio table near the porch railings and one near my feet. There is NO scent, no visible smoke and they are just effective. We have 2 small dogs also who are in no way affected by these. When we moved away to a colder (non-bug) location years' ago we gave our first set away. The second set (this set) s actually better! Compared to the earlier iteration , this model is slightlty smaller and less heavy. Yes I bought Lime green but just because it was cheaper and with quicker delivery date and when it comes to bitten ankles - I don't care what color it is if it turns up quicly and does the job! Truly this is the only produce in nearly 3 decades of mosquito-'blessed' locations that stops me from being eaten by the mozzies! Being honest - I think to get the FULL effect - it is wiser to buy 2 of them rather than expect one small machine to work an excessively large area but that's my only caveat and always having owned at least 2 of them, the results speak for themselves. I would also suggest you stock up on the butane canisters and discs - because you cane sometimes run out without expecting it. But that's it in a nutshell - I CAN sit outside of a summer's evening with these and enjoy watching the world go by without slapping my ankles and arms and giving the nasty horrors a five-course dinner! The review photo was taken in the pitch black tonight with flash. Ordinarily you will not see any big light, glowing or smoke.

I was skeptical but it really worked.
This is my second thermos cell device or use on heavy mosquito areas around my home. I use this one for smaller areas. It is run off of a butane cartridge. There is an igniter in the device. Each use requires a mosquito repellent Matt to be inserted which is the blue disc underneath the black cage. Does not work well for large areas but definitely works for independent use if you’re working in the garage or just sitting in the backyard. Easy to use. Butane cartridge seems to last for a long time. although the mosquito repellent mats need to be changed frequently. I recommend purchasing the additional mats when you buy your thermos cell.

The ONLY thing in 3 decades that keeps me from being bitten alive!
I purchased 2 of the MR300F with the camoflague holster for our son and daughter-in-law because they are running a campground that has mosquitos but I was unaware that those did not work above 7000 ft.so they are not working for them and I have been trying to get ahold of someone either by phone and email and I haven't gotten any response from either which is very disappointing! I would like to be able to return these 2 for a full refund since I just purchased them in April and I would like to purchase the one that is good for above 7000 ft. I would really appreciate someone helping me with this! Thanks Sharon.

Easy to use and works well
A Florida Park Ranger suggested we pick these up before we camped in a State Park there. My wife tested it and the really do work! Well worth the price and cost of each butane heater thingy, and blue cardboard plate thingy you insert...it heats up and releases the anti-bug stuff (sorry for my nonscientific vocabulary, lol!) Have used our Thermocell many, many times since I originally wrote this...camping in/from the Boundary Waters (Uppermost MN) to a humid iowa night in August, to a southern beach in TX..I too am one that gets bit when nobody else does...It really does work as advertised and as we witnessed at every campout we have been b/c where we usually would get bites, we didn't...I think we optimized with: 1 not being shy of refilling the blue inserts 2 we have two, placing one high on a table or chair, one low on ground between us 3 wind, even a slight breeze will have an affect on its effectiveness 4 DEET sitting on and penetrating the skin or this "petroleum distillates" (probably) inhaling, I guess I am going with the lesser of two evils but keeping the skeets & tics away 5 I guess no product can please all of the people all of the time...but for us, this is a must

That anyone purchasing the MR300F are aware they don't work above 7000ft.!!!
I was very skeptical that this would actually work, but I thought it was worth a try when I saw a camper using it and he said it worked. I used it for the first time the other day in the garden. I put it out where I was going to be working in a covered area (a greenhouse frame with shade cloth, so plenty ventilation) and turned it on. I came back 10 minutes later and did some gardening. I didn't get bitten once, I didn't even feel any mosquitos or hear any buzzing around me. For the first time in months I could actually do some gardening without the fear of being bitten. Normally I feel like I am running a gauntlet, quickly get what I need done in the garden and run back into the house. This time, I was able to peacefully work away in my garden. Definitely recommend it.

As Florida Ranger said...
Everyone who hunts where there are bugs knows how indispensable a Thermacell is. So, when I lost mine, I got this replacement. The unit itself is more substantial/stronger than my old one, so that's a plus. The screen where the mats go is a bit more snug, which hold the mats in better, as well. However, the old unit came with a much better holster/pouch. The new one is camo, but that is the only good thing about it. It has a noisy velcro closure, which is not what you want in the woods. There is no way to do anything to the unit, including check cartridge butane level, change cartridges, change mats, or even try to mount it, without the velcro RRRRRIIPPP. There is no strap to mount it/suspend on a deer stand/branch, like the old holster had. Also, the old holster had pouches on each side, one for a spare cartridge, and one for extra mats, both of which snapped closed. The new one only has one tight little pouch with a bad elastic closure, in which it is difficult to place and extract a spare cartridge or mats. I'm sure the new holster is cheaper to make than the old one, but Thermacells have never been a great deal. Please go back to a more quality holster geared at how the overwhelming majority of your users actually use the device: for hunting.
