Replacement knob for the Faberware Air Fryer - Model #HF-919B

The original knob for the timer on this fryer is pretty flimsy on the underneath shaft. It works fine starting the timer, but if you want to turn it counterclockwise to run out the timer, and turn the fryer off, it takes more force. Which then causes the shaft of the original knob to break. This is a no frills replacement that has thicker walls on the shaft part.

These fryers had 2 types of timer shafts Pin type and D type this fits the pin type...

Instructions are bare bones, but the air fryer is wonderful!
First off, my apologies for being late in posting this review. I received this fryer about a week or so ago but didn't know what to make with it because . . . I had NEVER used an air fryer before. Also, this particular model DOES NOT COME WITH RECIPES! Nothing, zilch, nada! You pretty much have to look for your recipes online because the Instant Vortex will not provide you with any. They will give you a very broad time and heat guide but that's it. In fact, my main complaint with this air fryer is mainly on the bare-bones instructions. For that reason, a lot of what you do with this air fryer is going to have to be through trial and error. There are more instructions to prevent you from lighting your house on fire than there are in the operation of the machine. So, as someone who has never used an air fryer before, especially an Instant Vortex Plus 6 Quart 6-in-1 thingamajig, what did I think of it? AWESOME! But before we get to why it's awesome, I need to tell you what you're going to get when you purchase this device. THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE PURCHASING: 1.) Most timers (at least in the US) when they are 00:00 it means 00 mins : 00 seconds. Not so with this air fryer. With the Instant Vortex the first two digits are hours and the last two digits are minutes. This was not clear in the instruction manual. Remember, I've never used an air fryer before, so this was new to me. 2.) When using air fryer mode, at around 3 quarters time, the fryer will ask you to turn over your food. This was also not very clear in the instructions. 3.) The basket is SMALL and not ideal for party size servings. Six quarts is good for a couple, but anyone with a big family is going to find themselves running multiple batches to get enough food cooked. If you're planning a big super bowl wing fest, you might want to get something bigger. BONUS: The air fryer DOES NOT get dangerously hot like an oven. You can accidentally touch the top of the fryer and not burn your hand off. The vent in the back is also warm but not blazing hot. As long as the safety instructions are followed, this machine feels very safe to use. Somehow we didn't blow a fuse when using the microwave and the air fryer at the same time, so that was also impressive, but your results may vary. All right, so let's get into exactly how I used my air fryer as someone who has never, ever used one before. - We added pepper and salt to the raw wings. Then we greased the tray and basket with Pam cooking oil. EDIT: (Don't grease the tray with PAM. You can spray your food not your tray. Or use a substitute instead of PAM.) - We found an online recipe that was for 24 minutes. At the twelve minute mark we flip over the wings and cook the other side. - After putting the food into the tray and setting the fryer for 12 minutes, we quickly discovered that the fryer must PREHEAT first. After it ran through its preheat cycle, then it said "ADD FOOD." Whoops. The wings stayed in there anyway. - At around 5 minutes, the fryer then said "TURN FOOD OVER." We didn't know it was going to give us this prompt. So we took out the basket to check on the wings, they were cooking but not yet finished, so we flipped them over. - Once the timer was finished, we removed the basket and saw that the wings were halfway cooked, awesome! We popped them back in for another 12 minutes but made note that in the future, we just put them in for 24 and wait for the fryer to tell us when to flip. Also, not once did I feel a blast of hot air like I do when taking things out of the oven. The fryer and the basket felt safe to handle AT ALL TIMES. - After another twelve minutes it was time to taste test. Did the wings cook thoroughly or were we about to get a case of salmonella? - The answer was YES! The wings cooked thoroughly. The exterior skin was nice and crunchy while the inside was juicy and flavorful. All of the excess oil dripped off of the wings and settled at the bottom of the basket. Awesome! - Clean up required dumping out the remaining oil into a bag, then cleaning the basket and grill with paper towels and water. THEN WE TRIED COOKING SALMON USING THE BAKE SETTING. - Grease the grill with pam. EDIT: DO NOT GREASE THE GRILL WITH PAM. You can put PAM on your food but not the grill tray. Supposedly this starts to erode some of the coating on the tray. Whoops! Found this out recently. - Pop 1.6lbs of Salmon into the basket. (This time we waited for the preheat) - Cooked for 7 minutes at 389 I believe. Don't remember. - Took the salmon out and found that the interior was still raw. Whoops. Again, no recipes means we don't know what the heck we're doing with this thing. Pop it back in for another 7 minutes. - Salmon bakes and is now thoroughly cooked. Still good, still flavorful, but we underestimated cooking time. WHAT ABOUT THE BROIL, ROAST, REHEAT & DEHYDRATE FEATURE? I, unfortunately, do not know. We haven't really roasted, broiled, or dehydrated food in my house. However, if the chicken wings and salmon are the standard it sets, then I'm sure those features will work perfectly. In fact, I have to say that I am supremely impressed with the Instant Vortex 6-in-1 multi use fryer. It's extremely safe t use, It cooks the food thoroughly, and it's super easy to clean. If you're looking for an air fryer with the versatility of an oven but without the hassle or increase to your gas bill, than this air fryer is definitely going to be a perfect fit for you! Very, very happy with this device and I can't wait to fry more food with it. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Toxic plastic taste and smell, disgusting!
A lot of reviews people complain about a toxic chemical/plastic/rubber smell that does not go away. The owners manual mentions that this may occur but is non-toxic, yet no one wants that smell in their house or on their food. Another review mentioned to remove the "rubber shipping legs" from the tray grate before using. These appear to be food grade silicone but I removed them anyways and have had no bad smells during the initial test run or two dishes I've cooked so far. This is a great little air fryer, remove these things and you'll be happy!

Instructions are bare bones, but the air fryer is wonderful!
There is a lot to like about this vortex 6 in 1 air fryer. A roomy interior cooking of space of 9 1/4 inches by 9 1/2 inches. The broil and bake functions that allow it to be used as more of an oven, roast function, and dehydrate. You will need to get some sort of trivet to really use the dehydrate function. I roasted peanuts, AF bacon, Baked cookies, broiled Parmesan mounds to make crisps and it all worked great. I even dehydrated some watermelon. I love that it beeps and says to add food when it gets to temperature. No more standing around looking for a green light or a light to go out, this is great for the functions like bake and broil. This is probably the easiest AF I've used that has multi functions. Plug in and use, temperature, time, picking a function, all very very easy. And with the knob you can change the temp and time while it's cooking rather than having to turn it off and reset. There is a manual, but it tells you to go online (gives you a link) for recipes and tips. So this is all fabulous and you're probably nodding along and wondering why, if this is fabulous, with it's ease of use, successful settings, ease of cleaning, is it a 4? well, it's more of a 4 1/2 but here's the deal. You know how most basket fryers have the detachable basket from the base? this doesn't work that way. at first I thought this is great! I don't want to think how many times I brain lapsed and unclicked the basket causing the bottom to drop ... happily usually on a counter or over the sink. Still.. Having the handle be part of the bottom unit seemed spiffy, until... Okay, so the bottom basket is one unit. Then there is a flat insert that has a divet in the middle and a thin metal handle that folds down. the insert has the usual drains that the basket insert in any other AF would have. So this is great, no more having to push the button and release the basket. Until I actually used it. On a regular AF I release the basket, the fat or drippings or whatever are on the bottom and I have a basket I can easily dump onto a plate or into a bowl. Now I have to put on oven mitts (thank goodness I have some that are glove like) and fish around for this little metal handle and pull the flat shelf insert up while trying not to spill the food into the bottom of the basket where there are drippings and burned bits and then try to balance it while sliding the food off onto a plate or bowl. Or fish around with tongs to a spoon to get the food out. Not an issue with a roast but a pain with fries or peanuts. Is this annoying enough to deduct a star? I've had this a few days and have come to the conclusion it really is. At least half a star. Is it enough not to recommend this AF, no. There are too many pros to this one con. But it's something to be aware of. You will probably want to buy a basket insert with a handle on top that you can pull things out easily.

MUST READ (Avoid bad smell)
Updated Review: Must use product after replacement. The first one was not usable. After getting a different unit the smell went away after 1-2 cycles. I now use this all the time and it is a permanent resident on my counter even with limited space. Only 4 stars because the first one missed and caused a lot of extra effort on my part. Have seen this often enough that they have serious quality assistance issues. Otherwise a great product. Previous review: The entire house smelled like burnt plastic after running it the first time like it suggested. The smell never went away even after running it 6 times. Barely tried to make food. Going to try a replacement because I really want to like this product.

great after replacement. Before: Burning plastic smell still present after 6 cycles
After listening to dozens of clients and friends talk about their air fryers, I decided it was time to bite the bullet so to speak. Consumer Reports rave reviews led me to the Instant Vortex Plus. I LOVE LOVE LOVE ❤️ IT! Everything seems to taste better cooked in an air fryer. Even salmon is more moist and flavorful. Plus food cook more quickly than traditional oven or fryer methods. The Vortex is large capacity so it’s easy to cook 2 or more types of food at the same time. Do it... you won’t regret it! Salmon and fries for 2 all cooked together.

Awesome 4 quart air fryer!
GUYS ! This is a serious win for me right now!! Ive been contemplating getting an airfryer for weeks !! AND a 120 off sale !?! SERIOUSLY!! I have no issue with the plastic smell at all. When you open the box its its covered in plastic so yes, theres that.. and MAKE SURE you take off the cardboard thats hidden inside (under the basket unit) .. ALSO idk if anyones reading the directions but you gotta burn the plastic smell off for 20 min at 400 degs. I did all that and Ive been cooking EVERYTHING in my air fryer. SO please don't let the plastic smell scare you away!! I promise it is a quick thing it goes away !

I’m in love with a kitchen appliance!
This is my fourth air fryer, and so far despite a few hiccups, it's my favorite. First is the size. Even though it's just my wife and I, I find 6 qt. to be the perfect size for large portions that still get enough room for the hot air inside to do its thing. Second, it evenly heats better and faster than anything else I've used. Having overdone tips on my fries was just something I thought I had to live with in order to get them to crunch. Not so with this fryer; perfectly crisp and brown through and through. Third is convenience. Unlike the analogue dials of past models, this hast a digital interface that lets you set exact time and temp, something that I find critical in not overcooking. Also, it beeps and gives you a 10 second window to put the food in when it gets to temp and also when it's time to flip the food; a great feature for beginners. As for things I don't like: Having a Vortex and and Vortex Plus is a silly idea. The two models are not different enough to warrant the extra confusion. More and more companies are doing this and I think it's a giant mistake. Finding ways to sell practically the same item at higher price points has got to go. Second, the manual is terrible. The only thing that is useful is a single table with, but even then the cook time are off. Do yourself a favor and knock off 20% of what's listed. Also, nowhere does it describe what the different buttons do! Finally, I'm not confident in the electronics holding up. I've already had a few issues getting the touch buttons to register, and have even seen the countdown clock spaz out and go from 3 min to 1 min. So far nothing that's ruined my food, but not convinced these things are going to magically get better and worse overtime.

UH-MAZING !!!
Works great, however, if you leave the 4 plastic inserts (with the arrows), it will cook them causing a plastic smell/taste in your food. Remove the plastic, good to go. Hope this helps.

Works really well.
My wife is a baker so we are also familiar with silicone in bakeware. We love this fryer. Yes, I saw the reviews referring to the odor so lets address that first. I was expecting a problem because my wife has one of those noses that can smell a single spray of a cleaner immediately from the other end of the house. Not kidding. This leads to things like not using any cleaner like materials with in several hours of bed or me completing tasks involving ordors while my wife is away. So I was needlessly worried. Any new appliance with nonstick surfaces and silicone parts that is subjected to contained, intense heat will need some cure time. I chose to cure the air fryer by running it empty/no oil/ no washing first about 5 times while my wife was away. I let it run, cool down and runn again. I didn't remove the silicone tabs as they are not packing material but designed to keep the tray in position so the heated air circulates properly to cook the food There was a minor odor the first 2-3 times but by five there was no odor. The pan was cured. My wife then ran it a 6th time empty when she got home because she was also scared by the odor reviews She did not smell any oder so washed and used it. She's very happy. The unit cooks well. The control layout is awesome and easy to clean since the selection buttons are on a screen and not actual buttons that accumulate grime. The controls are intuitive, easy to use and importantly, easy to make adjustments like cook time and temperature. We have cooked with this 5-6 time since it arrived and the quality is what one would expect from an Instant Pot product. It's awesome.

Instructions are bare bones, but the air fryer is wonderful!
This is my second air fryer. I bought this one after my first ones (Yedi) cheap plastic piece by the handle failed causing the outer basket to fall to the floor multiple times. I sought out a better built basket fryer and decided on this one. I’m incredibly happy with it. Instant vortex feels and looks much higher quality and was only slightly more expensive than the Yedi. (Came across it on sale!!). It’s easy to use and has nice features such as the reminder to shake or turn over your food if distracted while cooking. I was going to upgrade to the larger air fryers with 4 mini baskets and glass front, but read that they are a pain to clean. Since I use the air fryer as a compliment to my meals, I decided to stick to a high quality basket style. I’m glad I did. I use mine for the basics.... French fries, wings, chicken fingers, mozzarella sticks, frozen fish fry. Fried food crisp without the fatty added oil. The instant Vortex is the way to go! Don’t let The lack of recipes deter you. The basics are listed in the included book. Anything more advanced can easily be searched on YouTube or google.

Very sturdy, high quality basket air fryer
As for the smell so many complain about—having read about the issue before I purchased—when I received the machine I put it near a window under an exhaust fan and ran it empty through all its functions. Sure enough, I stepped outside and could smell the plastic from 20 feet away. Did it again the next day before trying the toast, using the exhaust fan. The smell is gone and was never in the food. The very first thing I cooked was toast! I buttered one side of homemade bread, put in under broil for 2 minutes and Voila! It came out brown and crisp, both sides, just like the toast I grew up with 65 years ago! So far, chicken leg quarters, grilled cheese, bratwurst and reheat apple pie with cheese on top. Since it came without recipes, I go online and search for specific instructions for the item I plan to cook, decide where to start and make notes for next time, gradually creating my own cookbook. While searching for info on the grilled cheese I learned that a toothpick should be used to hold down the top piece of bread—never crossed my mind to do that. So, in the beginning do some research to learn how others do it. So far I cannot figure out the difference between air fry, bake, and roast. Other than time and temperature, what else is different? If I set air fry at 360 degrees for 20 minutes, or bake at 360° for 20 minutes, or roast at 360° for 20 minutes, will there be a difference in cooking results? While another asked a similar question, no answer has been forthcoming. UPDATE: 1. The only difference between air fry, bake and roast are the initial start times and temperatures set by the manufacturer. Other than that they will cook the same if set to the same time and temperatures. The fan does not run at a different speed. 2. Using two oven thermometers I tested each function and found that this machine runs 20 to 25 degrees hotter than the setting! That explains some burnt and over-cooked items. I now adjust for the hotter results. I suggest you check your temperatures if your results are under or over done. 3. Still experimenting and enjoying the machine!

I simple chart of cooking times would be so helpful.
I HATE cooking and I can honestly say this air fryer has changed my life!! There isn’t anything you can’t cook in this thing and everything comes out amazing! I love the rack because it’s almost like a silicone coating so nothing sticks to it and it’s super easy to clean. It’s also the perfect size for a countertop

After one week...so far So Good!
The air fryer is easy to clean and use, however the instructions that come with it are barely adequate and give no direction about when to use the various settings. I like the appliance, so far, but was really disappointed by the instructions and website.

Best $90 I’ve ever spent!
I had been using the Instant Pot air fryer lid attachment for my already purchased Instant Pot and finally decided to upgrade to the 6qt Vortex Air Fryer. The Good: I can't compare it to other air fryers as I've only owned the 2 already mentioned but this is such a game-changer. I live alone so the convenience of having a mini convection oven that heats up to 400 degrees in under 60 seconds is so appealing. There is so much more room for activities now! But in all seriousness, the basket size is so much better than the lid attachment for the Instant Pot; which was so cramped. It's also so easy to wash and there are several accessories that will work in this air fryer: loaf pans, grill pan, mini muffin pan, donut pan, square parchment paper, skewer set, etc. The Not So Great: True to other reviewer's messages, there was a pretty dang pungent chemical smell that took a day or two to subside. I figure it was just a culprit of the manufacturing process. I did remove the little rubber feet from the inside tray so that might also be helpful to anyone not able to get rid of the smell. After I took all the pieces out of the box, removed any packaging or plastics, I just ran the thing at 400 for an hour a few times the first and second day to burn off any residual chemicals/plastics/whatever. Seems fine and I don't smell or taste anything other than my food.

So glad I upgraded!
UPDATE: I've used it 3 times since removing the silicone shipping legs on the interior pan. The plastic smell is lessening with each use. This is my second air fryer and it is so much easier to use than my previous one. It has a larger capacity yet takes up less counter space. It looks nice and modern. It was recommended by America's Test Kitchen and the price was pretty good. However, that plastic smell is so bad, it literally stinks up my entire apartment for an entire day. After reading other's comments, I inspected the air fryer to discover a cardboard piece inside that was used for shipping. I also took off the silicone legs on the insert as others have suggested. Hopefully, this will correct the problem. I'll update and add a star if does.

Best Air Fryer so happy with it
I've bought many kitchen gadgets and small appliances over the years. The Instant Vortex 6 Qt air fryer may be the best of them all! I've made "fried" chicken, Swedish meatballs, crispy new potatoes, reheated pizza, and even warmed donuts from the cider mill with great success! And, I've only had it for a couple of weeks. I can't recommend this air fryer enough! If you're thinking about buying one I don't think you can go wrong with this one. Regarding the smell encountered by several reviewers, I took the recommendation of someone and ran the fryer empty, at 400 degrees for 20 minutes, 3 times, before using it and had no issues with the plastic smell/taste in food that others experienced.

That stink tho = minus one star and UPDATE.
I’ve had two air fryers. This is my favorite by far. Cooks things consistently and seems to produce less frying smell then the ninja one I had.
