The Pink Panther Classic 129 Cartoon Collection 5 Disc DVD Edition Set 2009

Da-Dut Da-Dooo…

That unmistakable bass riff...who hasn't thrilled to the slinky, witty opening credits?  Arguably one the of the most sophisticated cartoon characters to grace the silver screen, much less Saturday morning television, The Pink Panther has evolved into one of the most popular characters of the past five decades.  Sporting the occasional top hat and tails, a cooler-than-cool strut and his trademark gentleman's cigarette holder, the Panther is the classiest protagonist any animated adversary might come up against.

As the story goes, in 1963, writer-director Blake Edwards was completing work on his spoof detective film, The Pink Panther.  Edwards felt the opening could benefit from an animated credit sequence, so he called upon the animation team of David H. DePatie and Friz Freleng, a legend from his Warner Brothers days, serving as co-creator of Bugs Bunny and Speedy Gonzalez.  And after hundreds of different animated sketches were rendered of the Panther, it was a drawing by neither of them (in fact one Hawley Pratt) that most appealed to Edwards.  The resulting credit sequence featured a bright Pink Panther and a bumbling Inspector Clouseau set to the rhythm of the series' now-famous theme by Henry Mancini.  The sequence was so popular, in fact, that some audiences felt the short was actually better than the film itself.  United Arts immediately hired Depatie-Freleng to animate a theatrical short to be featured before Billy Wilder's new film, Kiss Me, Stupid.  The Pink Phink took home the 1964 Academy Award for Best Animated Short, and with that a legend was born.  Since then, the Panther has been the subject of more than 160 cartoons for both theatrical and television exhibition and gained worldwide popularity.  129 of those shorts are included in this five-disc collection, as well as the full credit sequences to five films and a nice array of informative documentaries.

The Pink Panther cartoons, especially the earlier shorts featured on the first three discs, are cartoon classics. Perfect in their sweet simplicity, they pop with the bright neon colors of the 60's decade, while Mancini's theme permeates just about every one of them; thankfully, the varying arrangements of the instrumentation keep the song from ever feeling irritating, even as it becomes permanently ingrained into your brain.  The Panther just goes about his pink day in his pink world with his pink strut intact.
