Upright facing flowers are formed of crisp white petals surrounding a tuft of yellow stamens and framed by striking crimson sepals. Blooms persist for several weeks before petals drop to expose green, spurred seed pods. Plants will self-seed in ideal conditions. Uses: Edging, moist open woodland borders, mixed perennial beds and borders. Plants prefer partial shade and a moist, but well-drained loamy, soil rich in organic material but will tolerate full sun in cooler climates. Plants are prone to root rot and care should be taken to provide adequate drainage, particularly in areas with cool, wet winters. A. caerula is longer lived than other columbines and will generally last five or more years in the garden. Blooms occur in the second season when started from seed.
