Since these are tropical plants, the bulbs need to be dug up each fall and over wintered inside (if you live in a temperate climate). Here is Illinois, I usually dig mine up after the first frost, when the leaves start to wilt. I cut off the leaves a few inches above the bulbs, rinse off the majority of the dirt, allow to air dry and then store in a breathable cardboard box in a dry basement. I wait until I go to plant to remove any buds from the parent bulb, but you should be able to remove in fall as well. These are really easy to grow, other than the need to dig them up each year. They prefer full sun. I plant in early spring after frosting is less likely to occur (a few light frosts do not harm them as they should still be under ground at that point). It usually takes a few weeks after planting for them to start to break the surface. The photos of the growing elephant ears were taken in late September. They are what a 'large' for me will usually grow into through a full season. A small in comparison would take about 2-3 growing season to reach that size. The Large size usually have some extra buds on them as well as the parent bud, so you will get multiple shoots from the same planting right away.
