Literally changed me so I'll take the time to leave a long review
I've struggled my adult life trying to cook. Even basic recipes I manage to ruin the meat. So I gave up and ate out almost every meal. This was unhealthy and I gained a LOT! of weight and have high blood pressure. When I saw the original Meater, I was intrigued with the idea of something automating cooking steaks in particular. I bought the original Meater about 5 months ago and it really did change my life. I still eat out, but only 2-3 times per week. I have lost weight, have more energy, and blood pressure went down. All in 5 months. Even if you don't buy a Meater, just stop eating out and it helps. A few days ago, I saw this new Meater+ that now has a built in extender in the charger. I received it 2 days ago and have made Ribeye and Tri-tip already. It works great. With Meater (original one) I used an old iPhone next to Weber BBQ that would connect probe to Wifi. Then I used my iPhone to connect to probe anyway in the house. I have an access point in my house and could stay connected down the street. With Meater+, no iPad is needed now. The wood charger now extends the Bluetooth signal from probe. How it works is you just leave the charger next to BBQ and it extends the signal really far. I didn't measure the exact distance but my BBQ is in the back yard and my office is on the other side of the house upstairs. Connected perfectly and I answered emails while my steak was cooking. When alarm went off, I went back downstairs and had a perfect ribeye! Even tells you how long to let it sit before you cut it up. Couple tips- I updated the original Meater app on my iPhone and make sure you do the initial charge for 4 hours. I was so anxious that I tried connecting probe to iPhone out of box and it wouldn't connect. I thought it was defective. But then I let it charge for a few hours and then it worked perfectly.

When I found out that an even longer ranged version of this product came out I had to get it. I love the original thermometer but to get the extra range I needed a second phone of which I do not have. But anyway, having this plus version really helps. It's really smart of them to put a signal booster for the Bluetooth inside the charger! When you use it though make sure to keep the charger close to your oven. If you're on the fence about spending the extra $$ for this plus version, don't be, get the plus...you'll thank me later.

A smart meat thermometer got even smarter with extra range! A MUST-HAVE!
I bought the plus model. Was still wary from reading reviews. I had been using grocery store thermometers and had undercooked and wasted 2-3 chickens and a turkey breast over the last few months. I decided to bite the bullet and spend some money on something better. I had a chicken all lined up for the air fryer and was disappointed to read that this thermometer needs to charge for 4 hours first. Perfect excuse to eat out. Next night: I slid the thermometer in between the thigh and breast until it was past the line on the thermometer. Placed the turkey In the airfryer, set the temp, and went to the couch. The thermometer and my phone connected quickly and it showed my the ambient temp and current chicken temp. It let me pick an alarm temp and even was able to estimate time to completion accurately. Yesterday I made Cornish game hens and they were perfect. Tips: The base station needs to be within a few feet of the actual thermometer to work. Our Thermador ovens are not magnetic so I have to set it in the cupboard above. I have used it 15-20ft away from my phone but the base station and probe MUST be in close proximity. It does not seem to correctly read the temp in our convection oven. Cons: The base station/charger is cheap looking. The magnetic back was a nice touch and I’m happy it works well but the quasi-fake bamboo look means it goes in a drawer when not in use. Update: Using this with the Kamado Joe/Big Green Egg a few times a week now. The ambient temp reading is decent for smoking meats. It has plenty of battery life (it’s gone for 12+ hours). Pork Butts, Brisket, and Smoked Chickens.

Extra range? YES, PLEASE
Meater + Large BGE Weber Genesis iPhone X Ipad First off here’s the ranges I am getting in relation to the meater temp prob to the base. BGE with lid open - over 100ft line of site BGE with lid closed - Upto 40ft Weber with lid open - over 100ft line of site Weber with lid closed - upto 30ft Range from base to iOS devices iPhone - Outside over 100ft line of site iPhone - Inside around 30/40ft through brick and decking iPad - Inside around 30/40ft through brick and decking iPhone - using IPad as base station for cloud unlimited range I have checked accuracy of the meater+ by boiling in water and it’s within 1-2f of my other thermometers in boiling water. I have included some screen shots compared to my Igrill temps as a comparison. You do get a warning on the meater+ at boiling water temps but it caused no issue on accuracy. Now for my findings It’s gonna take some getting used to compared to my other system but shouldn’t take too long. What I do like is the estimated time and ambiant temps. The problem I had was I was cooking from the information on the ambiant temps on the BGE thermometer which were different by about 20f-30f to the ambiant temps around the meater so was expecting the meat to cook slower but it cooked faster than expected but the meat come out perfect paying attention to the time to cook and ambiant temps so I shut the egg down for an hr and then seared at the end of the cook and it was the best rib roast I have had to date. It was hard to trust the meater readings at first though but they were spot on and saved the cook being finished early. I also liked the way I could monitor from anywhere. I have a iPad in the house that is used for home automation and it’s within range of the meater base when cooking outside so this feature works great. Shame the meater block has taken so long to come out but with the style of cooking I do I think I will be fine with just the one but I’m curious if multiple probes can be connected to the meater+ base. I don’t see me using them on steaks, chicken, burgers on the grill as I have a feeling the flame temps with be too much for the ambiant temp sensor but if I do and keep a controlled cook then I will def be getting more.

Works great!
Avid backyard barbecuer. Was in the market to replace my oldschool thermometer dial probe with a digital one and came across the Meater+. Checked out their site and compared to some of the other digital ones the design and description of the Meater+ caught my attention so I decided to try it out. Skeptical because I just spent $100 on a thermometer but I have to say it was money well spent. I like the compact design and magnetic battery cover. The phone app was easy to navigate through, thermometer was easy to turn on and once I had everything set and the meat on the grill the rest was easy also. I just left it alone and reluctantly walked away - I’m usually one to stand by the grill and tend to the meat. Had no problem keeping tabs from my phone inside or out in front of the house. Got the 130 temp notification and cut my steak in half to see a perfect medium rare. Can’t wait to try it on other meats on the grill and I’m going to get another to keep and use in the kitchen. Highly recommend as a bbq and kitchen tool.

Feature filled thermoter
The Good: The design is slick and well thought out. The app for the Meater works well and the accuracy is spot on. A green light flashes on the base if the thermoprobe is within range and connected. It flashes red if not. The app will tell you as well if you are connected. The base station will give you considerable more range than advertised, but see the next section for the caveats. The app also has settings to change the different alerts. You can only choose from their list of sounds which is considerably less than the full array you have on the iPhone, but still, there are four alarms and maybe 12 or so sounds to choose from. No need for too many. The initial settings were just fine for me. They have just updated the app to add all sorts of carnivorous delights you can cook with the probe. From venison to kangaroo. This is a nice addition as I often go in for antelope and other less common meats. The Bad: The instructions leave a little to be desired, but it is not hard to figure out unless you are the easily frustrated type. There is a card in the box for support and the website has support as well. The Meater + comes with a bamboo magnetic base for charging and storage and in the back it has a repeater to get to the 165' range it touts. The base (and I assume the basic Meater) must be within 33' of the base for ovens and some types of grills. For smokers it is much closer. That number is in the fine print. In the case of the Orion Cooker I have, I can get the base station to recognize the thermoprobe about 12' away, through the smoker and the window to the breakfast nook. The base station has to stay there so it can connect to the probe. Once connected the app can pick up the base station, and thus the probe) all over my house and considerably farther away than 165'. But if someone moves the base it might disconnect and then you won't get updates or alarms and you might overcook your meat. The Ugly There isn't much wrong with this unit and I do recommend it to others. That said, it is a bit misleading (or just obtuse writing) which will lead you to believe that you can just plop the probe in some meat and your phone will pick it up all over the house. I read several reviews (and one YouTube video) that slammed the Meater for the short range despite the fact it is in the literature and on their site. It is probably not as prominent as it should be, but think about it, how can a little probe hold a battery, two thermoresitors, and an antennae and get 165' range? Not with today's tech I fear. Maybe when the Federation is founded. Either way, if they were a bit clearer about that for the Meater and instructions to first remove the probe before using the app. My guess is those who had issues already had the app open and so the probe paired with the phone and they didn't get the range they desired. Some Pointers If you turn on the app then remove the probe, the probe will connect to the app/phone and your range is now 33' (10' for a smoker). What is not said is that you have to fully exit and quit the app (swipe up on Apple), then remove the probe which causes it to pair with the base. Then open the app and your phone will pair with the base. Place the base where it is still flashing green when the probe is in the meat and the lid shut. Now you can use it all over the place. The app will show if it is connected properly and if it is not. I didn't notice where an alarm would sound if the base and probe stop syncing. If it doesn't have one that would be a nice addition. A nice loud one that vibrates as well. Wish list They make a basic Meater with four probes, which is a great idea if you are smoking different meats at the same time, or maybe just using the smoker, the grill, and the oven at the same time. I wish they had something like that for the Meater +. I assume it will come out at some point. Then again, I rarely would need more than one as I'm not running a restaurant. Also, I wish the magnets on the back were a bit stronger. For some reason my fridge it will slip down a few inches before attracting to some metal large enough for it to grab onto. Other kitchen items like the pot rack and microwave side have the same issues. I just think the weight of the base, battery, and probe are too much for the magnets to support. Bottom line, great unit, does what it says (even if you didn't read all it says). Just remember to remove the probe from the base first before opening the app or your range will be that of the basic Meater.

Throw away those old dial and wired meat thermometers.
I have previously tried the Meater (older version) and couldn't live with its limitations. So, with trepidation, I ordered the newer 165' range version. At first, I nearly returned it. Constant loss of connection and frustration even getting it to pair with its own base, a mere 10" away. After much research, I replaced the supplied battery in the base, cleaned the probe like it's never been cleaned before and now it works - consistently. Be aware, it seems to require thorough cleaning of the probe surfaces after every use. The one time I simply wiped it down, next try was a loss of connection. So, I resigned myself to thorough scrubbing after each use, and now it works as advertised. It is accurate and the range is good and it transmits w/o issue from my Kamado Joe through the heavy ceramic and lid without loss of signal. After these lessons, it's a keeper. But remember: Clean, clean, clean...

Good product
Second Edit: I used it again and after a shaky start, worked through a whole 4 hour cook time. The next time I tried to use it, the probe wouldn't pair with the base. Eventually gave up. Did use it again and it worked okay, but not the probe won't charge, even though the base knows the probe is installed, and the probe is clean like brand new. Every time I take it out of the base and start to setup a cook, I get a 'probe less than half charged' message on my phone. I really wished this worked. I love the application and the whole idea of this product. You just can't count on it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit: One hour into my second use, the probe lost contact with the Meater + and wont connect now 1 hour into a 12 hour cook. Nothing moved, the base was 15 feet away from the probe, and my phone was 20 feet away from my base. After I got the disconnect notice, I moved the base closer to the probe, but it won't reconnect. I could pull it out of the meat, clean it, put it in the base and try to reconnect, but I have a second wired probe in the meat I am already tired of screwing with this. It would be a really cool product if it worked, but it hasn't worked correctly two times in my first two uses. I wish I hadn't bought it. ----------------------------------- Got my Mater+ a few days ago, got it charged, downloaded the app, and got it paired and everything working. Perfect. I wanted to have it before cooking Christmas Eve prime roast. Fired up the app today, got the probe out of the Meater, and I couldn't get the probe to communicate with the base. I messed around with it for about 20 minutes, and got the whole chain communicating. Put the roast in the oven, and got it cooking. Then about 25 minutes into the cook, the probe stopped communicating again. The base was no more than 4 feet away from the probe. The only instructions were to move the base closer to the probe. I updated the base software, and came to a point in the cook where I could take the probe out of the meat. I cleaned it off, put it back into the base, took it out, and it started working. I put it back into the roast, and it continued to work for the last 1:30 of the cook. It was actually really helpful. I like this product, but it scares me that it was so temperamental when it was brand new.

Keep it Clean, clean, clean...
I'm always a bit confused by the 1 star negative Reviews. I suppose some will get sold with issues, but mine is working great. I bought the Meater back in January and it has functioned as it should. So far, I've cooked 6 steaks with it, giving the correct temperature as long as I did my part and inserted the probe in the thickest part of the steak in the middle. Once I had the probe too close to one side and it reported the steak was done when I knew better. Right now the Meater Thermometer is inside my Weber grill outside and located approximately 20 feet from the Charging Block with a wall in between. Two bars on the solid Bluetooth connection. If I move the Block farther away, the connection is lost at around 30 feet. This is a normal distance for Bluetooth. I have found that most issues with poor wifi connections can be traced to a crowded wifi channel. Too many other wifi APs on the same channel can weaken it. Find an uncrowded channel and change the settings on your wifi router. Also Bluetooth will act up when near large areas of metal or aluminum like a refrigerator or aluminum shielded door. Keep the Charging Block out in the center of the room or closer to the Probe. Right now the Meater is reporting the outside temp is 47º which is 1 degree off my Davis Vantage Weather Station is reporting at 48º. That's pretty good accuracy. I'm very happy with my Meater Thermometer.

Literally changed me so I'll take the time to leave a long review
Update (2/3/2020). I've had this for a while and still really like it. I had problems with not being able to charge it, but it was the back end of probe getting covered in "stuff". I used a sharpening stone and rubbed it a few times and it's back to new. I try to keep it flat on the stone so that it stays even. (btw, if you don't have a good real stone, you should get one. I'm using one that's been in the family for at least 50 years.) old review stuff: Just to give a little background. I barbecue at least once per week. I prep meals for my large family using both a offset smoker and a Weber Kettle Grill (22"). My primary cook is the Kettle. I will general cook tritip, chicken, or fish. I purchased the meater+ to replace my old dual probe Maverick (a great thermometer btw but hard to set up right). The first thing I noticed is that the probe range is greatly reduced by placing it into the kettle. That bit of info is pretty clearly stated and is the reason I purchased the Meater+. The Meater+ charging block serves as a Bluetooth repeater. I placed the charging box (which has magnets) near my kettle and this greatly extended the range. For me, the charging block/repeater needed to be within 3-4 feet of the kettle to get a stable connection. To connect to the WiFi, you need a second device connected to your Meater probe. Once you do that, the range is basically unlimited. I hope this little chart makes sense. Probe--3ft--> Block --10to20ft-->Device1-->WiFi-Internet-->Device2 The main limitation of the probe is its low temperature range. I think my Maverick goes up to 700F for both probes. The meater can only handle about 212F (boiling) for the internal probe. That's a little low. I think given time, I will screw up on a longer cook and end up exceeding that limit. The external temperature is a fairly respectable 527 F. However, this means you should not put it directly over charcoal. If you are going to seer your meat over a high flame, I would recommend that you stick the probe in after you do that. Because all of the electronics are in the probe, the probe must be inserted 2.5" into the meat. For roasts, large pieces of fish (salmon fillets for example), or large chicken breasts, this is pretty easy to do. I would not recommend this for small stuff. This is the primary advantage of wired probes. As long as the tip of the probe is in the meat, it doens't really matter where the rest is. There are very strong positive and negatives for this product. Positive - Great software interface, convenient, works great within its limitations Negative - Poor connection range, low internal temperature limit. Thermometer not suited for smaller pieces of meat (less than 5").

Not ready to give up my wired thermometers; close but not quite!
So I have held off giving a review because I wanted to use it several times so I could give an honest review. Here we go: What I like: 1. Easy to use 2. Accurate 3. No wires to connect or hanging out from your grill or oven 4. Easy to use the app. simply walks you through the next steps and monitors your cook 5. Works with your iPhone 6. No more overcooked meat 7. Has a handy "rest" function that lets you know when it is time to cut into your meat. Gives you USDA safety temps 8.Beautiful graphics representations of your cook 9. Handy storage 10. Easy to clean 11. for use indoor and outdoor cooking 12. you can use when you are using your rotisserie (can't do that with a product that needs wires to connect) 13. no need for two probes to monitor the internal temp of meat and the temp of your oven or grill What needs improvement: 1. needing another smart device to take advantage of the cloud feature (seems wonky, but it does work) 2. price point, but still solid technology for the money 3. if you have the (+) unit, you should not experience problems with the distance and dropped Bluetooth signal 4. App needs to be updated so you can monitor more than meat, like baked potatoes or the like. 5 That's it! Basically, i have spent a lot of cash looking for something that would help me better gage internal temp and cook the perfect steak or pork chop. I've bought various wired units and while they work well, the concept of hanging wires is just too outdated. Not to mention, it is difficult to keep those wires cleaned, and then there is storage.. what a pain. Would I buy this again or recommend it to a friend? 1. Yes, yes and yes (and I am not being paid for this review)

Fine Product
This thermometer has greatly simplified my life allowing to cook very good steaks. Predominantly I use it to grill beef steaks like rib-eye, striploin and tenderloin. You can adjust to using it but it is better if you know these tricks: 1. Put the base very close to the grill. Better somewhere on the grill where it is not very hot. If you bring the base 20 ft. or so away, it starts losing the connection. You, with your smartphone can be much further, the app will tell you if it is disconnected from the base. 2. Set the target temperature a lot lower that you want. In general, the thicker is the cut, the lower should be the target comparing to what's the real temperature you want to achieve. For example, for a standard 1.5 inch steak, if you want 135°, set it to 125°. It tells you to remove it from the heat 5 degrees below that target but still while you wait for it to cool down, the temperature may go 10° or even 15° above your target. A very thin steak may be OK with the exact temperature, but 2" cut will need a big adjustment, or you will overcook it. I wish I could be able to enter the depth of steak into app and it would adjust. 3. Insert the probe all the way down till the beginning of the black tip. If you leave an inch or so of the silver part out you may start getting "close to overheat" and "overheat" messages, which are very annoying and also covering the entire screen so you can't see anything. I have a low-power grill and it also has an infra-red bar, so there is no open flame, but still it does that. Nothing bad really happens, the probe is fine and working, it's just an annoying paranoic mode. 4. Always clean the back of the tip of the probe before recharging, or you may end up with "low battery" right before you need it. That's a contact part and it gets greasy. Use a very fine sand paper to polish it when needed. So, yes, it is useful, I like it and my steaks improved a lot since I don't open the grill too many times, only when need to turn the steaks over. But there is a space for improvement.

Never over cook your expensive cut of meat again.
I've used the Meater long enough and with enough types of meat to give a good assessment. First, the bamboo holder/charger/connection point is brilliant and looks nice anywhere you put it. The app on Android is very easy to use and set up. The range is also great. The main issue I've found is that Meater consistently reads temps at 4-5 degrees F higher than they really are. In other words,, Meater will read 165 when my other thermometers read 160 or so and chicken is still visibly pink even though Meater reports 165. I think their cook process relies too much on resting as well, especially for whole birds or large pieces of poultry which need to be closer to target temp before taking off heat. The good news is that the error is very consistent so I now adjust all my target temps 5 degrees F I actually want and this has worked well for getting beef to medium rare vice rare and for fully cooking pork and chicken.

Greatly convenient, but you need to know a few things to use it
I picked this up after watching Guga Foods, a youtube channel, use this device. No wires, I'm in! When I received the item, everything felt to be amazing quality. The wooden case is an excellent finish and fit for the probe that it placed on. The probe was a bit thicker than I had expected, which made it just slightly harder to probe meat. Not a big deal. Maybe a problem for thinner meats. The app is super simple: you probe it in, select your desired meat and temperature, and read the temperature readings. Actually, it even gives you a timer that rings 5 min before the temperature in case you are away from the device. The readings themselves come in two ways: internal and ambient temperature. Internal is the meat, and ambient is the oven temperature. The readings have a bit of a delay, but for baking, it's not that big of a deal. The internal temperature is spot on accurate, but the ambient temperature takes a long time to heat up and almost never displays the correct temperature. Although, for some reason the predicted time to cook is usually accurate. 33ft seems accurate for this, as I can go to my living room right next to my kitchen, but no further. You also should keep the probe between you and the probe. Overall, this is a great product to have, but it is definitely a high end purchase for those who really want to be wire-free.

Good overall, but tends to undercook
UPDATE below: Original review - I have longed to try one of these of many different brands. After research and reading dozens and dozens of reviews, I landed on the Meater Plus. I opened it up and found it to be in a beautiful wooden box which is actually it's charging station. Comes with a AA battery for charging. I downloaded the app. I am 60 - so not a tech wizard. I was able to sync with app very easily. It did take a few minutes (maybe updating as well). I just used it to cook a beef roast and it worked perfectly. One thing I would note - I was going for a medium rare - and "upped" the suggested temp of 135 to 140 because I was nervous... the Meater Plus counts the resting time in the finished temp! So, I ended up with a little to the medium than to the medium rare. I am going to trust the Meater Plus next time. It notifies you of when to take your food out and then reminds you when the resting is done. You can follow the progress on the app on your phone. Has a lovely dial that shows where you are in the cooking progress. I am very, very impressed. I love it. I am eager to try it in my all natural turkey for thanksgiving! It's just a real handy tool with a modern twist. It's a little bit of an investment, but I think it's worth it. Having said all of this, I never hesitate to update my reviews should new info seem useful. UPDATED review 4/1/2021.... The more I use this thermometer the more I love it. I have learned to "trust" the resting time - I have read other reviews that report overcooked food and I wonder if they might not be trusting the process. However, could also be faulty items. I am grateful that my thermometer has worked perfectly each time and I could not be happier. It has taken so much stress out of my cooking life. I won't roast without it. Or cook a thick steak without it. Pretty much anything you need temp on. I am not compensated in ANY way for my reviews and I am sharing my honest experience and opinions.

Accurate except for maybe ambient Heat
5 stars, I am loving the MEATER so far! For me it was easy to use, works fine despite the negative reviews, and is almost too handy. I don't know what all the negative reviews are, but I suspect alot of it is operator error and or not following the instructions. I did get the "gen 2" model though, maybe they worked all the kinks out by Gen 2. That said, I have owned the unit for just over a month. I have used the unit at least 5 times. 3 of those 5 times were just tests to make sure the unit works and was accurate. It did, and it was. Since testing I have done 2 cooks with the unit. The first cook was "open air" on a large rotisserie cooking a whole lamb. That went well. The other cook was a 1.5" thin rib-eye completely enclosed inside a smoker. On the smoker cook, I put the charger/repeater about 5 feet from the smoker, and had no issues with connectivity at all. Admittedly, I did not test to see if the full range of 165 feet was accomplished with this configuration, but it did work fine for me while I wandered around between 25 -30 feet away. I mentioned the completely enclosed detail because so many said they could not get theirs to even work in this situation. As mentioned above, I think if you follow the directions, the unit works fine. I also want to mention that for this cook the smoker was set to a temp of 450. The unit too the heat no problem and is still working. Clean up is easy, you can definitely get the thing wet and it will survive as long as you don't leave it submerged. Pros Very handy, small, wireless, app tells you when you hit the target. Cons I wish the charger had more indication on it, or an additional probe is fully charged indicator. One thing to note: If you are cooking a steak or smaller piece of meat at a high temp, I would recommend setting the desired temp a few degrees lower than what you want the final temp of the meat to be due to the continued cooking effect after removing the meat from the heat. This has nothing to do with the operation of the MEATER.

Meater plus
As a UDS/charcoal user w/o a thermostat like on a Traeger, I am compelled to know what my smoker's ambient temp is to make sure it's not getting too hot or too cool due to whatever variables. The disparity on the ambient temp is just way too large. For example: I am early into smoking a turkey breast roast as I type this up (and I did a chicken last weekend with similar results): my two other probe systems show the ambient temp is 252/253F, but the Meater+ is showing 196F. If I saw 196F on my regular probe, I'd be going out there stoking the fire or seeing if one of the kids closed the damper on me. "Well are the probes near each other?" Admittedly not as close today, but on the chicken the probes were all nearly touching at the same point for about an hour and consistently showed about a 50F difference until towards the end. It's a reluctant deal-breaker for me, but maybe not for you. The internal temp is spot-on, it has a fantastic app, and I get really good range on it w/my Android device. How good? I have the repeater on a window sill by my back patio where the smoker is. I can go upstairs w/o issues, but I lose signal if I go out the front door. I love the charting, the cook completion estimate (though this takes a while to kick in and fluctuates greatly based on temp rise), how easy it is to clean and charge... it has so much going on for it!

Best digital thermometer we have
Best digital thermometer we have. This is the 3 rd one we've bought and gave to our kids as gifts and they too love it. So easy to use and can take it with us camping too as it's small and travels well.

Good Product
I received this item late and had to e-mail the seller. I did receive the item but have only had a chance to use it once. It worked great!! Took the guesswork out of smoking a ham. I would recommend this to anyone who needs this type of thermometer.

Gift. No idea.
I am using this thermometer on our smoker and it seems to be working great. Although the temp is 4 degrees lower than my digital instant meat thermometer. The plug for the cord does seem to be made cheapily so I will take care when inserting the probe into the device.
